Warburton ‘overwhelmed’ by OBE in New Year’s Honours

-

WELSH rugby star Sam Warburton has said he was “overwhelmed” to receive an OBE, describing the achievement as the “pinnacle” of his career.

The British and Irish Lions captain led scores of Welsh recipients in this year’s New Year’s Honours list, which was released on Friday evening.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Cardiff Blues flanker Warburton, 29, said: “I am overwhelmed, privileged and very proud to be appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.

“This recognition is the pinnacle of my career as it is not only a personal honour but it is as much an award for my teammates and coaches at all levels as it is for me.”

He also said the achievement would not have been possible without the people around him, “who have shaped my life in rugby”. He added: “Thank you to everybody who has contributed to my career, in particular, my mother, father, my wife Rachel and extended family.

“That you also to the Welsh Rugby Union, Cardiff Blues and Derwyn Jones my manager for their unwavering faith and support.”

Warburton’s coach at the Blues, Danny Wilson, said he was a “great role model”.

“It’s a fantastic recognition of a player who has done all there is to do in the game,” said Wilson. “He’s captained the Lions twice on two successful tours. He’s a great role model in terms of how to act professionally and he’s got an edge that you need. But away from the rugby field he’s got time for everybody.

“I have been on a couple of things like hospital visits with Sam and he is phenomenal. He’s a lovely man who certainly goes the extra mile for people.”

Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns added his tribute, describing Warburton as an “inspiration to millions”.

Joining Warburton on the 2017 honours list were teachers who have turned around failing schools, an Army veterans who now helps coach people, and scores of well-known faces.

There were also police officers, ambulance staff, charity workers, politicians, soldiers, scientists and volunteers.

Meanwhile, Sir Paul McCartney hailed Ringo Starr as the “best drummer, best pal” while he congratulated his fellow Beatle on his knighthood.

The drummer received the honour in the New Year honours, 52 years after receiving an MBE with the “Fab Four”.

Sir Paul, who received his own honour in 1997, shared a picture of the pair on Twitter, writing: “Huge congrats Sir Ringo! Sir Richard Starkey has a nice ring to it. Best drummer best pal!”

Starr was recognised in the New Year Honours list for his services to music and in a short message, signed off with his trademark phrase, he said: “It’s great! It’s an honour and a pleasure to be considered and acknowledged for my music and my charity work, both of which I love. Peace and love. Ringo.”
