Anger after Welsh flag is replaced by Union colours

A ROW has erupted after the Welsh flag was replaced with the Union flag at a castle in Wales.

It is not clear why the change has been made at Neath Castle, but a local politician likened the incident to the recent controversy in Flintshire over the iron ring sculpture, which was seen by some as a “celebration of repression of the nation”.

Neath Port Talbot councillor Jaime Evans said he was shocked to find the Welsh flag had been taken down off the pole in favour of the UK flag.

He said: “I have received complaints that a Welsh flag has been removed from Neath Castle and replaced with a Union flag.

“Neath Castle is not in the Neath South or Gnoll ward, which I represent on Neath Port Talbot or Neath Town Councils respectively, however, I am very disappointed to see that the town council appears not to have learned from Ken Skates and his disgraced Ring of Shame installation planned for Flint Castle.

“We in Neath, like the rest of Wales, are a proud people and should, like any other country in the world, have our national flag flying over historic monuments.

“I will be taking these complaints to the town council.

“Despite my personal beliefs on the union, I would not object to the Welsh flag flying alongside the Union flag, but I cannot support the decision to replace our flag.”
