Wales On Sunday

How they rated

- BY ANDREW GWILYM

LUKASZ FABIANSKI

An accomplished performance from the Poland international, rocksolid dealing with any aerial threat and made a couple of big saves before and after the equaliser.

MIKE VAN DER HOORN

Asked to play at right-back and was given a right old outing initially as Christian Atsu and Ayoze Perez targeted him. Was urged forward by Carvalhal despite those difficulties and his cross set up the equaliser.

KYLE BARTLEY (C)

Walked a tightrope after being booked early following his surprise selection as captain. Troubled by the pace of the Newcastle attack, but read the game well, although distribution was off on occasions.

MARTIN OLSSON

Looks to be enjoying Carvalhal’s desire for his full-backs to get forward. Final ball still lacking, but he was a genuine and regular outlet.

NATHAN DYER

A difficult afternoon for the winger. There was one nice turn early on but was regularly easily shuffled off the ball, but he got going and was more involved as the game developed.

KI SUNG-YUENG

Back from injury, had a slow start, but was more prominent after the break, playing a couple of lovely crossfield passes and linking play well. A welcome return.

SAM CLUCAS

A mixed bag. Made a number of interceptions and worked diligently without the ball, was neat and tidy with it, but got away with a couple of lapses in possession that led to Newcastle chances.

TOM CARROLL

Busy without making a big impact. Is safety-first in much of his play on the ball and that caution becomes anxiety when in space in advanced areas.

JORDAN AYEW

Another goal for the Ghanaian, showing great reactions to reach Karl Darlow’s save first. Took the wrong option on occasions and had little service for much of the afternoon.

OLI MCBURNIE

Put in a tremendous amount of effort for little reward. Absolutely starved of service in the first half, but provided some good link work after the break before being withdrawn.
