H UNDREDS defied the pouring rain and mud to celebrate the life of an eight-year-old boy who died when his family’s car crashed into a tree.

Crowds of players and spectators gathered for a fundraising day yesterday to celebrate the life of Jenson Evans.

Described as a “sweet and loving boy”, Jenson died on December 28 when his family’s Seat car crashed into a tree on an unnamed road near Talbot Green known locally as the Smilog Forestry Road.

Jenson’s parents and two brothers were also admitted to hospital after the crash on the road from Pontyclun to Coed Ely.

After Jenson’s death more than £10,000 was raised to support the family in a matter of days by the community.

The memorial day was held at Wattstown Park, Wattstown, Rhondda, and saw Jenson’s football team battle through heavy mud to play a fundraising match.

Braving the rain, more than 500 spectators lined the pitch to remember the primary school pupil before releasing balloons. Rugby matches were also held between Wattstown RFC’s youth, teams.

During the day The Voice kids contestant Sophia gave a performance alongside an auction selling items including signed Gareth Bale football boots and signed boxing gloves from Joe Calzaghe.

Family friend Brendan Lyons said: “We wanted a memorial day and to raise a bit of cash for the family so they don’t have to rush back to work and can grieve in peace. What senior and veteran Rhondda and the whole of Wales has done with the fundraising has been unbelievable.”

Mr Lyons, 34, said:“We’re just trying to create a happy memorial day and achieve something positive.

“A lot of people knew Jenson and a lot of children went to school with him so we’re focusing on making it a great day.

“The funeral was hard but we’re trying to keep it in a positive light.”

Paying tribute, Mr Lyons added: “Jenson was a lovely, cheeky guy. He was the best footballer of his age – he was this talented, nice, cheeky boy.”

During the memorial day a minute’s silence was held to remember Jenson along with memorial flowers laid on the pitch spelling out the word “son”.

Other flowers in the shape of a Manchester United football shirt and Wattstown RFC shield also paid tribute to the young footballer.

Darren Macey, councillor for Yny- shir and father of X Factor finalist Lloyd Macey, added: “The day was absolutely fantastic, it really showed people’s commitment even more despite the weather.

“People were there from eight in the morning to put tents up and were there for six or seven hours.

“There were a few tears and emotions but we had some fun and jokes as well.”

Coun Macey added: “There were at least 600 or 700 people there. It was a tremendous effort.

“It’s all the community coming together. I played rugby with Jenson’s dad and uncle and they have played a really integral role in the club and community.

“There’s been support from across Rhondda Cynon Taf but also across Wales. Obviously it’s a terrible time but it’s certainly brought the whole community together.

“The idea is to celebrate Jenson’s life. He was a lovely little boy and at eight years old it’s a horrendous thing to happen.”
