Wales On Sunday

VIEW FROM THE COACH

-

WALES just came up short against England at Twickenham, falling to two tries from home wing Jonny May. The visitors had a touchdown from Gareth Anscombe controversially ruled out by the TMO as they slipped to a 12-6 defeat.

But it was a battling effort from Warren Gatland’s side and here’s what the Wales coach had to say. WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE DECISION NOT TO AWARD GARETH ANSCOMBE A TRY Warren Gatland: “It looked like a try to me. Everyone else I’ve spoken to who has seen it (has said) it’s a clear try.

“To me, it’s disappointing that they can get that decision wrong.

“It’s such a critical moment in the game, such a big decision.

“You get a guy over from New Zealand to be the TMO, he has one big call to make and unfortunately he’s made a terrible mistake.

“At this level that’s pretty disappointing.” HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOUR SIDE’S PERFORMANCE IN TERMS OF STAYING IN THE GAME? WG: “I was really proud of the guys in terms of the effort.

“It was tough to be positive given the conditions.

“We kept England scoreless in the second half, we kept playing and the game started to open up a bit when the weather improved.

“There were a couple of big moments, we were disappointed to concede the first try. It came from a turnover that was a little bit unlucky.

“So we’ve conceded that and then not to have been given what we thought was a legitimate try… a couple of massive moments.

“I’m pretty proud of the effort by the players and the endeavour.” Q: WILL YOU SEEK CLARITY OVER THE TMO DECISION? WG: “I can’t do much about it now can I?

“I just struggled a little bit on the wording.

“He said that England got there first and there was no clear downward pressure from Wales.

“I saw it completely differently.

“I thought Gareth got there, his hand was there and clearly there was downward pressure.

“It’s human error, he makes a mistake, but at this level and in front of 82,000 people when there’s a lot at stake, guys have got to get that decision right.

“You can understand people make mistakes, but that looked pretty clear cut to me.” WERE YOU SURPRISED THE TMO DIDN’T TAKE LONGER OVER IT? WG: “We looked at it in the box from a few different angles and we thought it was a try.

“We were surprised when the decision came.

“Then the referee said ‘I can’t hear you clearly’ but he’d heard the TMO say ‘no try’.” WHERE DOES THIS LEAVE YOU IN TERMS OF THE SIX NATIONS? WG: “It was important we got a bonus point out of it in the end.

“We have to go to Ireland in a couple of weeks.

“We’ve had some pretty good success over there.

“It’ll probably be quite attritional in the way that Ireland play and depending on the weather conditions.

“They tend to play a lot of nine and England did that, they were short off nine and played those weather conditions, particularly in the first half. We’ll expect something similar in a couple of weeks’ time.” WHEN DID ANSCOMBE FIND OUT HE WAS PLAYING AND HOW IMPRESSED WERE YOU WITH HIM? WG: “Yesterday morning, the medics ruled Leigh Halfpenny out before the captain’s run, so we said he’d play at 15. “I thought he did a good job. “I thought England dominated
