Brave Bargoed hold firm

IT was Bargoed who produced the magic as they overcame the Wizards to take the spoils in a thrilling Principality Premiership encounter.

Bargoed started on fire and took the lead after five minutes when full-back Matthew Lewis slotted a penalty after a strong run by wing Ashley Norton.

And the home side went 6-0 up soon after when Lewis kicked another after a long period hammering away at the visitors’ try-line.

It took the Wizards about 25 minutes to get going, but when they did, they didn’t mess about and earned a penalty try to take the lead after Bargoed brought down a driving lineout.

Bargoed deservedly went ahead again after Lewis picked a lovely angle to cross under the posts just before the interval after the home side put the Wizards under intense pressure.

Outside-half Calum Jones’ conversion made it 13-7. And there was still time for Lewis to stretch their lead to nine points near the stroke of halftime with his third penalty.

With Bargoed down to 14 men after number eight Ieuan Jones was yellow carded for a deliberate knock on, Aberavon took advantage, Banfield romping home for a try which he converted.

The home side were soon down to 13 men after hooker Leigh Meades was sin binned for dipping his shoulder.

Then Aberavon blindside Lee Purnell was the latest to leave the field for a high tackle.

Aberavon game close to stealing it at the end, but brave Bargoed held firm.
