IT WAS a photo finish at this year’s Grand National as Tiger Roll went on to win the classic horse race yesterday. The eight-year-old, ridden by jockey Gordon Elliott, narrowly claimed victory in the four-and-aquarter-mile contest, after Pleasant Company came with a late rattle to almost join him on the line.

But it was the 10-1 challenger who took glory, with Bless The Wings, the winner’s stablemate, coming third, and Anibale Fly was fourth, as Irish runners dominated.

Welsh jockey James Bowen, rid- TWO women have been rescued from a fire at a house in Newport.

Firefighte­rs were called to Alexandra Road at 9.14am yesterday after the blaze took hold at a threestore­y house.

The road was closed and traffic was stopped as the fire affected the traffic lights in the area.

It is understood they were not seriously hurt.

A Gwent Police spokesman said four people are being treated for smoke inhalation.

He said there was nothing “untoward or suspicious” about the incident. later back in the stables.

But it wasn’t only the racing that caught people’s eyes – a whole host of famous faces were spotted in the stands.

Coleen Rooney was at Aintree, wearing a black dress and diamond earrings. The footballer’s wife is a regular at the races, having only missed Aintree twice since her first high-profile appearance in 2006.

TV presenter Helen Skelton attended the races with husband Richie Myler, after hitting the headlines earlier this year when it was announced she was not going to present the Commonweal­th Games in Australia.

Christine McGuinness and d husband Paddy looked loved up with a day at the races. The former r Miss Liverpool cheered on the horses orses from the stalls.

And reality stars from Love ve Island were there again.
