Wales On Sunday

So which Labour member could be the next person to lead Wales?

-

THESE are the AMs most likely to be in the running to replace Carwyn Jones as Wales’ next First Minister. Mark Drakeford He’s the current Cabinet Secretary for Finance and leads on the Government’s Brexit approach.

Professor Drakeford was born and brought up in West Wales before moving to Cardiff nearly 40 years ago and has worked as a probation officer, youth justice worker and for Barnardo’s.

From councillors to colleagues, there is universal praise for him. One source described him as the “cleverest man in Wales”. Vaughan Gething The current Cabinet Secretary for Health, Vaughan Gething was elected as an AM in 2011.

Father to a young son and husband of Michelle. He was born in Zambia, educated at Aberystwyth and Cardiff universities before going on to be a solicitor.

Anyone in the room who heard Carwyn Jones speak about the effect being First Minister has had on his family couldn’t help but think twice before putting their name in the hat.

But don’t be surprised if you see Vaughan Gething confirming his intention to stand. Eluned Morgan A veteran of the House of Lords and the European Parliament, she is currently the Minister for Welsh Lan- guage and Lifelong Learning.

She served in the House of Lords for three years.

She was granted a peerage in 2011 she was responsible for leading for Labour in the Lords on the EU Referendum Bill and led for Labour on two Wales Bills.

People have already spoken about the support female candidates in the UK leadership election got from Labour members who think it is high time there was a female leader – and Baroness Morgan with her experi-

ence in Brussels and Westminster fits the bill. Ken Skates Ken Skates has represented Clwyd South since 2011. A former Cambridge University student and journalist, he became Deputy Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport in 2014. Since May 2016 he has held the economy brief and has often been touted as a future leader.

He’s in a similar position to Vaughan Gething and Jeremy Miles and the theory is that if all three chose to stand, it could split the vote allowing another candidate in. Jeremy Miles Only elected to the Assembly in 2016, he was born and brought up in Pontarddulais.

A Welsh speaker, he went to Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera in the Swansea valley and New College, Oxford where he read law. He is the current Counsel General. He’s definitely ambitious and has hinted at wanting to take a step up. Huw Irranca-Davies The former MP for Ogmore stood down in 2016 to stand for the Assembly. He has a CV packed with experience.

From working in a number of government departments to his experience in food and rural affairs as well as the environment, there is plenty for him to draw on.

He has already said he will consider standing.
