Eight street robberies in Newport in just three days
THERE have been eight street robberies in Newport city centre in just three days.
Gwent Police have said four people have now been arrested and are currently in custody, but have urged the public to be vigilant.
A spokesman for Gwent Police said four offences occurred between Wednesday, May 16, and Friday, May 18, in the area of the Old Green roundabout, with four others occurring in the vicinity of the railway station underpass, the Riverfront, Clarence Place and the bus station.
“The robberies have been committed between 2pm and 11pm, with groups of youths approaching victims and demanding money or belongings,” he said.
The spokesman said additional officers have been drafted into the area to carry out foot patrols, both in uniform and in plain clothes, and that officers are investigating the offences already reported.
Gwent Police Superintendent Ian Roberts, local policing commander for Newport and Monmouthshire, said: “This crime series is a real cause for concern.
“We will pursue those responsible and bring them to justice.
“Gwent Police will also work with Newport City Council and other partners to consider crime prevention measures as a matter of urgency.
“In the meantime I would ask the public to remain vigilant and for anyone with information about this to contact Gwent Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
