SOUTH WALES PREMIER

ST FAGANS are the new leaders of the South Wales Premier League after a fourwicket home win over Newport in their top-of-the-table showdown.

Visitors Newport, leaders heading into the weekend, were inserted after losing the toss and posted 193-8 off their 50 overs.

Callum Taylor top-scored with 34 while Andrew Leering was the leading wicket-taker for the home side as he took 5-39.

Opener Jeremy Lawlor then struck 87 at the top of the order in reply for St Fagans, while Oscar Kolk made 35 as they squeezed home with four balls to spare.

St Fagans are now the only side left undefeated in Division One while the result signalled a first defeat of the campaign for Newport.

Reigning champions Cardiff bounced back from back-to-back defeats with a narrow 13-run win after an almighty scare at bottom side Mumbles.

After winning the toss at Marespool, visitors Cardiff elected to bat, but were soon staring down the barrel of a third successive reverse after being bowled out for 97 in 37.1 overs.

Harry Bowles top-scored for Cardiff with 33 before he was dismissed by Rhodri Evans (3-13), while Jack Straw (3-19) was also among the wickets.

However Mumbles – yet to win a game this season – then suffered a collapse of their own, all out for 84 in reply.

Only Evans (30) really troubled the scorers as Greg Holmes and Tegid Phillips made their mark with the ball with three wickets apiece, while Osama Subhan also took a couple.

Meanwhile, Bridgend Town, who had beaten Cardiff last weekend, were unable to back that up as they went down heavily by 10 wickets at home against Port Talbot Town.

Having lost the toss and been inserted, Bridgend slumped to 79 all out, with Lewis Jones (4-16) and Josh Tobin (4-21) inflicting most of the damage.

Port Talbot then needed just 16 overs to knock off the runs in reply to bag their first win of the campaign, with Alex Milton unbeaten on 41 and Anthony Thomas also there at the end on 36

Elsewhere, Ammanford also recorded their first victory of the season, beating Pontarddulais at the Ffosyrefail Ground by five wickets.

Hosts Bont posted 172-8 off their allotted 50 overs after being put in, with opener Mel Williams top scoring for them with 58, an innings which included seven fours and a six. Paul Rees also chipped in with 36 before being run out.

Matthew Roberts (3-32) was the leading Ammanford wicket-taker, while Tom Murphy took 2-19.

Opener Jack Murphy then led the charge in reply for Ammanford, striking an unbeaten 92 from 111 balls to help steer the team home with 3.1 overs to spare while Josef Davies finished 26 not out.

Neath, the other side to beat Cardiff a fortnight ago, continued their excellent start to the season as they made it four wins of five, beating Ynysygerwn by 53 runs at the Gnoll.

Having been put in, openers Steffan Roberts (37) and Richard Grant (64) set Neath a platform by putting on 82 for the first wicket to set them on their way to 217-6 off 50. Sean Griffiths also made a useful 38.

Ynysygerwn were then all out for 164 in reply with Andrew Brewster (4-21) and Gregory Thomas (4-36) shining with the ball for Neath. Yuvraj Odedra made 35 for the visitors.

In Division Two, leaders Penarth lost for the first time this season, bowled out for just 114 on their way to a three-wicket home reverse by Newport Fugitives.

Ynystawe have replaced them at the top after they won by five wickets at home against Clydach.
