THIS was the scene after a car crashed into a lamppost outside a couple’s home. Belinda and Nigel Jeffries were left unable to open their front door to help an injured passenger after a Ford KA crashed in the middle of the night on Cardiff Road in Treharris.

A man was taken to hospital with “serious injuries” after the incident, which took place at around 1.30am yesterday.

Police are now appealing for witnesses and a man, believed to be the driver of the car, was arrested.

Belinda Jeffries, 57, said she woke after hearing the crash outside her house.

She said: “Another car had been coming in the opposite direction and stopped and passengers were trying to smash the window but it was wedged.

“People were trying to smash the window to get the guy out but the fire services managed to. My husband phoned the police.”

She added: “We couldn’t open the front door, we couldn’t get out of the house as it was up against the front door. The passenger was slumped in the front but we couldn’t get to him.

“There was smoke coming out of the engine and my concern was that it was going to go up in flames with the house and the man with it.”

According to the couple, this is the fourth accident to happen outside their house in the past two years. After having two cars written off in the same space of time, the residents, along with their neighbours, are unable to park any vehicles outside their home.

Mrs Jeffries said: “We want the council to put traffic calming measures in place. Someone will die there.

“The cars are mounting the kerb. I’ve had two cars written off in two years.”

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: “At 0127 hours on Saturday, August 11, 2018, police received a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision involving a Ford KA that occurred on the A4054 Cardiff Road, Treharris.

“As a result of the collision, one male has been taken to hospital and is being treated with serious injuries. Another male who is suspected of being the driver has been arrested by the police and is currently under investigation.

“Police would like to appeal for any persons who may have witnessed this collision and advise them to contact South Wales Police on 101 quoting incident 109 of 11/8/2018.”
