Dog and sheep rescued from sea

-

A DOG chased a sheep off a cliff in Rhossili... but a fisherman was on hand to save them both from drowning.

Lyndon Williams, from Dunvant, was fishing with his girlfriend on Wednesday afternoon when the sheep and dog fell 20ft off a cliff edge near The Worms Head hotel.

The 29-year-old said the dog had chased the sheep off the 20ft cliff, and followed it over the edge.

“I was fishing when I could hear a dog barking. The next thing I know the dog and sheep had fallen in. I didn’t see the fall but another fisherman told me what had happened.

“I immediately jumped into the sea to find them, as I knew they were close by, because of the tide the sheep was getting hit against the rocks,” he said.

“It was very deep where they were, the dog managed to hold onto a sheer ledge but couldn’t move from where he was.

“I picked the dog up and climbed back up the cliff, there’s a walking path on the cliff which I used to get the dog back to its owner.

“Another fisherman then helped me put the sheep back on land, luckily both of them seemed fine,” he added.

Mr Williams said it was important for dog owners to keep their pets on a lead near livestock to prevent this from happening.

“The owner of the dog was very apologetic. I told him that he needs to make sure that his dog is on a lead at all times near livestock.

“At the end of the day I’m a local boy and I care about the farmers and livestock.”
