WENT FOR PINT – ENDED UP IN MALLORCA

AMAN from Merthyr went for a pint after work – only to end up in Mallorca just hours later.

Alun Griffiths, 27, from Gurnos, decided to call in to the Gurnos Club to have a few drinks with friends on his way home from work. But he didn’t end up getting home for another two days.

“I was in work on Tuesday morning and I’d woken up in a stupid mood when you just get a feeling you’re going to do something stupid,” Mr Griffiths told us.

“After work I went to the Gurnos Club and there was about 15 of us all talking about holidays.

“So I said ‘anyone want to go on holiday now? Let’s go up the airport and see where we can go anywhere in the world.’”

After travelling to Cardiff Airport with his friend Nigel Lewis, the pair were told they could book on to a flight that evening going to Palma.

Once they had landed they shared a taxi with some men outside the airport to nearby Magaluf.

“There’s a Palma in Italy, too, so we didn’t know if we were going to the one in Spain or Italy,” Mr Griffiths added.

“We fell asleep on the plane and woke up in Spain – thank God.

“My Mrs rang me, saying ‘where are you?’ and I said ‘I’m in Magaluf’ and she said ‘food’s ready’ and I said ‘I’m not joking, I won’t be home for a few days.’ “She wasn’t best pleased.” With no hotel and no return flight home booked, the pair headed straight out until the early hours of the morning.

Mr Griffiths added: “The first night we stopped drinking at 5.30am.

“The next morning we kept drinking right through and booked a hotel for the Wednesday night, had a sleep for an hour and carried on and came back on Thursday.

“When we got back we went back to the Gurnos Club – it was crazy.

“They had all said ‘it’s a stupid idea’ but because we actually went and broke the routine, when we were out there they were all saying ‘we’re trying to book flights out there’.

“We all ended up booking a holiday to Benidorm.

“My family didn’t know I’d gone until I was out there.

“It cost us £90 each to get out there and £307 for the hotel for one night and my Mrs booked for us to come back. It was about £800 each altogether.”
