Potter’s pride as Swans make it two out of two

-

GRAHAM Potter spoke of the pride he felt for players and supporters after Swansea City held off a fierce Preston fightback to maintain their 100 per cent record in the Championship.

Jay Fulton’s header was enough to give the Swans all three points against North End, at the end of a week where fans had been left disappointed by a miserable transfer deadline day.

But those emotions never threatened to get in the way of their support of their players, who were cheered to the hilt.

Swansea had been on top during the opening half, with Oli McBurnie missing a penalty prior to Fulton’s winner.

But they were pinned back in the second period, with substitute keeper Erwin Mulder and debutant centre-half Joe Rodon among those to impress in the rearguard effort.

“I am very proud of the players and the supporters. They were both tremendous,” said Potter.

“It was a really difficult game. I thought Alex’s team were very good and made it difficult for us.

“We had to ride our luck. Our substitute keeper had to make saves and we were under pressure. But when we lost our keeper, we could have felt sorry for ourselves and we didn’t.

“We had flashes of quality, we were not perfect but people keep talking about how tough the Championship is and I agree with them. You have to be resilient.

“If you don’t do that then you’re dead in any league. You can have an identity, but you have to respect the opposition. We were trying to hang on for the victory. We did it and the environment here today was one to be very proud of.”

Potter had missed his pre-match press conference on deadline-day due to illness, with the Swans offloading Jordan Ayew, Sam Clucas, Federico Fernandez and Jordi Amat, and bringing in only Declan John.
