Wales On Sunday

I was always of the belief, when Anscombe came to the place of his mother’s birth from New Zealand, he would be a real asset.

The early signs were he was a natural footballer and it’s proving so, with his attacking instincts fixing defences and creating gaps for others.

His kicking game and the way he kept his team on the front-foot by putting the ball in front of the forwards was also a real plus.

There was also the lovely crosskick for North which showed the pair are on the same wave-length.

Big George and, hey, it was great to see him back to his best following his injury problems because it’s like having a new player in your team, latched on to it, but unfortunately stepped out of play as he dived for the try-line.

Anscombe has suffered from flitting from outside-half to full-back and back again. It’s unfair on him and it would be better for his career, for Wales and Cardiff Blues if he was only selected at No.10.

Wales will benefit against Australia, Tonga and South Africa by giving Anscombe the nod and I truly believe the likes of Parkes and Jonathan Davies can profit from his presence and extra know-how.

He can make that Welsh back-line tick in a way we haven’t seen in recent times. All it needs is for Gatland to give him the green light...
