UNBEATEN Penybont took another step towards achieving their goal of promotion to the Welsh Premier League after beating Cwmbran Celtic 3-1 – an eighth win out of nine in Welsh League Division One.

Player boss Rhys Griffiths, Curtis Hutson and Luke Borrelli all found the net at Bryntirion with Chris Ham scoring for the visitors.

Bont’s weekend got even better with the news that Haverfordw­est County had crashed 3-2 at home against Cwmamman United – their second straight reverse.

Cwmamman twice came from behind to bag all three points with Ryan Thomas netting in each half while Ryan Hurlow got the other goal.

That result also allowed Afan Lido to jump above the Bluebirds and into second place after they came from behind to edge out lowly Pontypridd Town 2-1 at the Marston’s Stadium.

Liam McCreesh and Mark Jones found the net for Lido who are two points behind Penybont but have played three games more.

Haverfordw­est slip to third and are now four points off the summit having also played a game more than Bont.

Division Two leaders Croesyceil­iog lost for the first time this campaign as they slipped to a 2-1 home defeat by Caerau Ely.

Elijah Chilekwa got both goals for the visitors who are third in the table and now five points behind Croesy but do have three games in hand.

In Division Three, leaders Trethomas Bluebirds got back to winning ways with a 3-1 home victory over AFC Porth.
