SWANS HIT BACK WITH QUICKFIRE DOUBLE TO CLINCH WIN

SWANSEA City scored twice in two second-half minutes to secure an impressive comeback victory over Sheffield Wednesday at the Liberty Stadium.

After a goalless first half, substitute Marco Matias fired Jos Luhukay’s side ahead midway through the second period after a mistake by Joe Rodon.

But Bersant Celina and Wayne Routledge both found the back of the net in quick succession to ensure Graham Potter’s men claimed backto-back league victories.

Kyle Naughton started at left-back in the absence of the injured Martin Olsson, with Connor Roberts returning to the starting line-up on the right side of Swansea’s back four.

The Swans dominated possession early on, although they had Roberts to thank for thwarting Lucas Joao just as the Portuguese looked to fire at goal.

Routledge twice went close for the hosts after being played through on goal by Oli McBurnie and then Rodon, but he was denied by Cameron Dawson on both occasions.

Having seen the Swans control the game, Sheffield Wednesday started to improve as the first half wore on, and Joao should have put the Owls ahead in the 23rd minute, although he drilled his low shot inches wide.

Matt Grimes and Nathan Dyer both fired in shots from distance for the Swans, while the latter also had a shot blocked in first-half injury-time, but Potter’s men were unable to find a breakthrough as the score remained level at the break.

Both sides made changes at halftime, with Cameron Carter-Vickers replacing Mike van der Hoorn for the Swans and Matias coming on for Josh Onomah for Sheffield Wednesday.

And it was the visitors who had the clearest opening after the restart as Atdhe Nuhiu picked out Matias just inside the Swansea box, but Roberts intervened at the pivotal moment.

And an uncharacteristic error from Rodon presented Joao with a chance to open the scoring, but the Portuguese curled just wide.

However, the Owls didn’t have long to wait to get the game’s first goal as they managed to punish Rodon for another mistake, with substitute Matias lashing home midway through the second half.

Jefferson Montero and Celina were summoned from the bench either side of the opening goal, and the latter made an instant impact as he slotted home from Roberts’ cutback to level proceedings in the 71st minute.

And the turnaround was complete just a minute later as Celina dinked a ball over the top of the Wednesday defence to send Routledge through on goal, and the winger fired through the legs of Dawson to make it 2-1.

The hosts almost wrapped up the points in the 84th minute as Oli McBurnie headed Barrie McKay’s corner at goal, although his effort cannoned against the crossbar.

And, while the Swans had to withstand some late pressure from the Owls, they held firm to clinch their first home win since October.
