POLICE descended on a Welsh residential street yesterday following a disturbance at a block of

flats.

Armed officers were seen outside the property in Gors Avenue, Swansea, and people in homes next door were evacuated.

Fire and ambulance crews were also at the scene.

There were reports that threats had been made.

Police issued a statement saying they had been called in during the afternoon.

The South Wales Police statement yesterday evening said: “Police are currently in attendance at Gors Avenue, Swansea, dealing with an ongoing incident. Officers were called at 3.20pm to reports of a disturbance involving a man at a block of flats. Emergency services are at the scene.”

Gors Avenue is a residential street that runs from Cockett to Cwmbwrla, north of the city centre.

Neighbours gathered outside on the street to watch events unfold.

One resident, who didn’t wish to be named, said: “It’s worrying – it is not every day you see armed police outside your house.”

Another resident said there were initially two officers at the scene, who were apparently trying to access the property, but more arrived soon afterwards.

“We heard the police banging the doors,” he said.

“Something always happens around here, just not for a while.”

Kimberley Watts, of nearby Gwynedd Avenue, said the electricity and gas had been turned off in the flats.

“When something like this happens, we stick together,” she said. “This is unheard of around here.”

The incident was still ongoing last night as we went to press.
