Carson leaves it late to snatch win for All Whites

-

SWANSEA defeated Pontypridd in the last play of the game thanks to a Callum Carson try.

The home side took the lead with a quickly recycled ball and Carson used his strength to hold off a tackler to score a well-taken try.

A huge scrum by the All Whites’ pack earned a penalty as tempers threatened to boil over. James Davies found touch on the Pontypridd 22 and Jay Williams took the lineout before a chip through to the corner was collected by Josh Thomas, who touched down for a second home try.

Rhydian Jenkins replied for Pontypridd with a try from a maul and the points-fest continued when a poor handling error gifted the visitors an attack and a patient buildup by the forwards saw Kristian Parker crash over for a five-pointer.

An unstoppable maul to the line by Pontypridd was illegally collapsed by the home pack and a penalty try was awarded, with Tom Sloane also sent for a spell in the sin-bin.

After a lengthy delay due to a nasty-looking injury for Josh Thomas, Tom Ham took the wrong route from the back of a scrum and gave away a penalty, which Ben Jones successfully kicked.

But a scrummaging offence by the visitors gave Swansea a penalty early in the second half and James Davies cut the gap to three points with a successful kick at goal.

A superb run by Mason Grundy took play up to the 22 and a desperate Whites defence gave away a penalty, which Ben Jones kicked to the corner. Dale Stuckey powered through a couple of tackles, but was brought down a few metres from the line and the move became fragmented and Pontypridd lost the chance to extend their lead.

In the final few minutes, James Murphy was handed a yellow card for preventing a quick penalty and James Davies found touch to give the Whites one final chance.

A strong run by Max Nagy took the home side forward, and with the Pontypridd defence struggling to cope, James Davies threw a scoring pass to Carson who dived over to seal a sensational victory.

SWANSEA: Tries: C Carson (2), J Thomas; Con: J Davies; Pens: J Davies (3).

PONTYPRIDD: Tries: R Jenkins, K Parker, Penalty try; Cons: B Jones (2); Pen: B Jones.
