He attacked his pregnant girlfriend with a claw hammer and ordered her to tell medical staff she had fallen down the stairs. Mathias would not let his partner call 999 but went to hospital with her to make sure she lied to doctors then knocked her unconsciou­s when she told the truth.

STEVEN MURPHY

Murphy brandished a knife at a woman in the street before kicking his “defenceles­s” victim in the head in an unprovoked attack.

Moments earlier he had waved the knife at council workers in Swansea and chased after their van. A judge told the defendant that unless he tackled the problems underlying his behaviour he had “the capacity to kill”.

KAYLEIGH FRANCIS AND MALCOLM HALL

The burglars confronted a woman who was in the early stages of dementia in her home in the middle of the afternoon. Drugged-up Hall and Francis searched the woman’s bedroom looking for things to steal to fund their drug habits.

RYAN WESTON

Ryan Weston gave his girlfriend a cocktail of drugs on New Year’s Eve before she died. Hollie SheridanCo­nnis died just hours after telling Weston she would marry him as the couple spent the holiday drinking alcohol and taking drugs. The pair had decided to celebrate New Year’s Eve at a Welsh beauty spot as they had recently reconciled their “volatile” relationsh­ip.

The garage owner got his brother-inlaw and friends involved in supplying cocaine, using his premises as “the hub” of the conspiracy, while his son dealt cannabis. Twynham was leader of the organisati­on while brother-inlaw Nicholas Gale and associates Lee Lazenby and Nathan Turner helped out and son Ethan Twynham sold cannabis to friends.

JODIE HAMMOND AND KATIE THOMAS

The cocaine-dealing couple told police they were looking for a lost horse when officers swooped on their car. But in the vehicle Hammond and Thomas had a bag full of ready-to-sell coke deals and a stack of cash.

MORGAN BUTTS

The teenage drug dealer was caught by the police after posting a video on social media advertisin­g Ecstasy for sale.

Butts was found to have 10 bags of cannabis at home and messages on his phone offering to sell someone an ounce of the Class B drug for £185.

ROBERT PUGH

The ex-boss of a popular outdoor activity centre was jailed after being found guilty of abusing three boys.

Pugh, who used to run the Storey Arms in Brecon, was convicted of the abuse which took place in the 1980s and ’90s.

He had denied indecent assault and stood trial at Cardiff Crown Court.

JUSTIN NICHOLS

The warehouse worker who was trying to save enough money to buy a gravestone for his father turned to dealing cannabis when he lost his job. Cardiff Crown Court heard Nichols was working in Avonmouth but could no longer get to work from his home in Newport when the staff coach stopped.

KYLE LEWIS

The cocaine user assaulted six police officers by kicking, biting and spitting as they tried to arrest him and take him to the police station.

Lewis managed to slip out of handcuffs in the back of a police van before biting one officer’s finger and kicking another in the chest, leaving them with injuries.

JONATHAN DAVIES

The young cannabis dealer walked the streets armed with a stun gun, knife, and knuckledus­ter as he went about his “business”. Davies boasted in text messages to customers about the different types of cannabis he was offering – drugs with names such as “Buddha cheese” and “blue gelato”.

JESSICA PRICE

Frightened residents were woken by a fire alarm in the early hours of the morning after Price deliberate­ly set fire to clothes and rubbish.

Residents of flats in Heol Ty Llwyd in Tonyrefail could hardly see through the thick smoke and some struggled to breathe while others could see flames by the stairwell.

The 31-year-old admitted arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered.

DARIAN BRIGDALE

The driver forced a police van to perform an emergency stop before wheel-spinning in front of the officers and speeding off.

Brigdale then shot through a pedestrian crossing while the traffic lights were on red just as a pedestrian began to cross.

CHRISTOPHE­R GIBBS

He started to use Class A drugs after being prescribed opiate-based medication following a brain injury as a result of falling off a ladder.

Gibbs had to be put in an induced coma for three weeks following the incident in 2015 and began using heroin as he recovered.

He was caught with buprenorph­ine – a heroin substitute – at HM Cardiff Prison on January 17 last year.

ASHLEIGH WILKINS

The expectant dad kicked his pregnant partner in the stomach and dragged her around by her hair in a terrifying 30-minute attack. Wilkins punched his girlfriend in the face then pushed her into a wardrobe causing her to fall. At this point he kicked her in the stomach and back.

CAROL WILLAMS

She cruelly stole almost £17,000 from the terminally ill father of her partner. The man, who is housebound and has a range of health conditions, had been putting the money aside to pay for his own funeral so the burden would not fall on his children.

But Williams helped herself to his savings, spending it on online gambling sites, food and clothes – including a wedding dress.

PAUL EVANS

The sex offender got hold of a secret smartphone which he did not tell the police about just months after getting out of prison.

Evans is required to declare all internet-enabled devices and make them available for inspection after being convicted of attempting to meet a young girl he groomed online.

LUKASZ WECKOWICZ

The elderly owner of a shop was knocked unconsciou­s after being punched in the head and dragged behind a counter while Weckowicz stole £6,000 worth of jewellery.

Mr Raza, 83, was approached by two men wearing dark caps on September 9, 2017, as he was closing his shop, Raza’s Buy and Sell in Newport for lunch.

STACEY SMITHAM

Her partner suffered damaged lungs and had to be put into a medicallyi­nduced coma after she set fire to their flat during a row over Valium.

Firefighte­rs with breathing apparatus had to enter the property and carry the casualty to safety.

LIAM JONES

Window cleaner Jones had “glazed” eyes when he was spotted by a police officer in a pizza takeaway and was found to have £13,500 of cocaine in his BMW.

He was handcuffed when the officer thought he was going to try to run away as he was told his car would be searched.
