Archbishop calls for candles to be lit on day of prayer

-

THE Archbishop of Wales is inviting people to join him in prayer during a national day of faith and action on Mothering Sunday.

People across the UK will be lighting a candle in their window at 7pm today and are being asked to pray for those suffering from the coronavirus, those who are anxious and fearful, and those working in health and social care.

They are also being encouraged to look after their neighbours by keeping in touch and helping where possible.

Archbishop John Davies has called on people to bring light to others who may be in need during these “difficult days”.

“We are presently living in unprecedented times due to the Covid-19 crisis,” he said.

“At times like this we need hope, we need strength, we need light. People across the nation are being invited at 7pm this evening to light a candle as a sign of hope, as a sign of lights and a sign of the strength that we need.

“If you can, will you do this? And will you focus on the candle as it burns, remembering just how important it is for us to give, to bring light to others who may be in need?

“The candle is giving itself to others. Commit to lighting a candle yourself at 7pm, sharing with others the hope that we can bring at times that are challenging and, for some, pretty dark.”

The Archbishop also appealed to young people who may have found their education or jobs suspended to use some of their spare time to help those in need.

The national day of prayer and action is being organised by the Churches Together in Wales group. Chief executive the Rev Canon Aled Edwards said: “There are already stories being told of wonderful acts of kindness across neighbourhoods.

“Alongside your prayers, take the opportunity to telephone or email someone who is isolated, buy some food for your local food bank, offer to deliver shopping for an elderly neighbour.

“We may not be able to touch physically, but we can make connections in so many other ways.”
