SIX more people have died with coronavirus in Wales and the overall infection rate has dropped slightly.

The latest daily update from Public Health Wales (PHW) yesterday recorded 208 new positive cases in the last 24-hour period, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to 207,646.

The number of people who have died with coronavirus in Wales within a month of a positive test now stands at 5,482.

The infection rate across Wales is now 42 cases per 100,000 of population based on the seven days up to March 14, a fall from the figure of 43.7 reported on Friday and still below the key Welsh Government benchmark of 50.

A rise in infection rates this week was caused primarily by outbreaks in some local authority areas including Merthyr Tydfil, Anglesey and Conwy.

The data show that 1,231,830 people have now received a first dose of the vaccine and a further 329,530 have had both jabs.

Dr Christopher Williams, incident director for the Covid19 outbreak response at Public Health Wales, said: “While the level of infection across Wales has declined in recent weeks, there are still several areas which have substantially higher rates.

“It is vitally important that we don’t lose the substantial gains that have been made, and therefore I would like to send a clear message to everyone that coronavirus hasn’t gone away and there are still a large number of people who have not been vaccinated. ”
