GIVE A HOME...

- KATIE BELLIS Reporter katie.bellis@walesonline.co.uk

THERE are many Welsh rescue dogs currently in need of a new home. And centres are currently experiencing an unprecedented amount of interest, with some dogs getting several hundred applications, according to Dogs Trust.

Due to the pandemic, the rehoming process is still being done virtually at some centres, although it is best to check with each centre. Here are just some of them described in the words of the people who know them best at rescue centres across Llanharan, Swansea, Llanelli, Bridgend and Holywell.

HOPE RESCUE, LLANHARAN

■ Bella, aged four, Cane Corso Cross Bella is a very loving and affectionate girl who is a firm favourite with the staff at Hope Rescue.

She can be unsure of new people so new adopters will need to come down to the centre to meet her multiple times to build a relationship with her. Bella is looking for an adult-only home where someone will be home for the majority of the day with her, at least initially.

She loves playtime with her toys and once she knows you is a real clown. She is a foodie, which helps hugely with her training, but can be worried of people approaching her at meal times.

Bella can be slowly introduced to other dogs out and about and has made some good dog friends at the centre but would benefit from being the only pet in the home. Bella is a really special girl and would love a home with direct access to a private outdoor space.

Elsa is a sweet girl who has led a sheltered life so far which means that she can be worried and take time to know new people. Once you have a relationship with Elsa, her bouncy playful side shows.

Due to her sensitive nature she is looking for an adult-only home with no visiting children. She lacks confidence around dogs but could live with a laidback male dog of a similar size.

Elsa is looking for an owner home for the majority of the day and will need house training. Elsa can react at new people when out on walks or if they enter the home so any new owners will need to be prepared to work alongside

staff at the Rescue Centre to implement training strategies. She is looking for a home where owners will go at her pace and will slowly build up her confidence in new situations.

■ Alf, aged nine, German Shepherd Alf is a wonderful chap looking for that comfy spot in his very own home to snooze the days away in. He may be nine but he still loves his walks and will happily explore new areas. He has shown himself to be a very well-mannered boy whilst he has been in his foster home and so could live with children 12 years and over, providing they are confident around bigger dogs.

He has done well with his house training. He can be left for a few hours during the day when needed but does enjoy company so a family who are home during the day would be ideal for him. Alf needs a little more help with socialising with other dogs. Due to this the centre is looking for him to be the only dog in his new home. He cannot live with cats.

Alf suffers from a condition called anal furunculosis: this is managed by daily medication. Due to his size the cost of this medication is £200 per month so any new potential adopters will need to carefully consider the financial responsibility of adopting Alf.

MANY TEARS ANIMAL RESCUE, LLANELLI

■ Candy, aged seven, Greyhound Candy is calm and gentle and has lovely manners with other dogs but is also very happy and content in her own company. She could be an only dog as she does appear to enjoy human company best of all. She truly is the sweetest girl.

■ Esta, aged four, Newfoundland Cross Esta is a girl in need of a very special home. She arrived with us very withdrawn and worried but is coming on and learning to trust. In an experienced home she will transform and flourish. ■

Keel is a beautiful, quirky little boy. Since arriving at the rescue he has come on dramatically in terms of confidence,

walking on a lead and has an affectionate side which is starting to show itself.

DOGS TRUST, BRIDGEND

■ Alfred, aged seven, Bulldog English Alfred is looking for an experienced home with owners who are confident reading his body language. He can be nervous meeting people, but will come around at his own pace.

Alfred enjoys his walks and mixing with small dogs but must be the only dog in the home. Alfred cannot live with cats or small furries. Alfred would benefit from having his own secure garden to play in. Due to Alfred lacking in confidence, he must live with children aged 16 years and over and with a home where there aren’t many visitors.

Alfred does have a medical condition and will require a leg operation once he is in a home.

He is a sensitive boy who comes around in his own time. He will need an adultonly home with an owner who understands his timid nature. Dave would appreciate a quiet home without many visitors so it is easier for him to feel safe. He can’t live with cats or small furries. ■

Holly is looking for a quiet, adult-only home with patient, dog-experienced owners who will give her time to settle into her new home. Due to her nervous nature, minimal visitors are advised.

Once Holly knows you, she is affectionate and loving. Holly is best suited as the only dog in the home. Unfortunately, she is unable to live with cats and small furries.

Dave, aged five, Crossbreed Holly, aged two, Deerhound RSPCA LLYS NINI ANIMAL CENTRE, SWANSEA

■ Freddie, aged one, Terrier cross Collie Freddie is a very friendly but lively dog.

He needs an owner who has a good understanding of dog training and someone who has plenty of time to dedicate to his development. Freddie would enjoy varied walks, so someone who loves the outdoors would be an ideal match.

He gets on well with other dogs but does need to learn how to be calm before meeting, as well as learning a few manners for socialising as he can become quite vocal at times.

NORTH CLWYD ANIMAL RESCUE, HOLYWELL

■ Danny, aged nine, Lurcher

Danny has been in and out of the rescue for a few years now and is just simply waiting for his perfect family to come along. He is a very friendly boy who loves everyone he meets and will pull towards everyone if it means he will get some attention. He is a very energetic dog and does need a home where he will get lots of exercise, preferably with a large garden where he can burn off some of his energy.

Unfortunately he does have quite severe separation anxiety so needs a home where he won’t be left on his own. He needs to be the only pet in the home, with no visiting animals. Danny is looking for a home with children aged seven and older.

■ Benny, aged four, cross

Benny is looking for an adult-only home as he can be jealous of children and so would prefer to have all the attention to himself. Benny is very playful and he loves all kinds of toys and having a good run around, therefore he would really love a big garden with fencing of at least 6ft high. Benny is looking for a home as the only pet so he can have the one-toone training he needs.
