Boozy youths facing a town ban

-

YOUTHS have been warned they could be banned from Tenby for 48 hours if they travel to the seaside town on the train today to drink on the streets.

Police in west Wales have confirmed that a Section 34 Order is now in place covering Tenby which allows officers to move people out of the area and stop them from returning for a period of two days.

It follows anti-social behaviour seen over the Easter bank holiday weekend when groups of between 15 and 20 youths gathered and clashed, having travelled down to the Pembrokeshire town by train.

On that occasion the youths were moved on and alcohol was seized from them.

Potential troublemakers are being warned that extra patrols will be carried out in and around Tenby, including on trains to and from the town.

“Following last weekend we had some concern from the community of Tenby due to anti-social behaviour related to the groups of youths from Pembroke, Pembroke Dock and Tenby, and subsequently those groups clashing,” said Sergeant Stuart Wheeler of Dyfed-Powys Police.

“Alcohol consumption by these youngsters was a factor. Proactive action was taken, and we are keen to avoid a repeat of this behaviour this weekend, and have therefore put plans in place. Additional resources have been allocated, which will allow us to respond quickly and prevent matters from escalating.

“Tenby Neighbourhood Policing Team and response officers will be carrying out high-visibility patrols in the area, covering areas known to be popular with youngsters.

“Pembrokeshire council licensing officers will be assisting us in ensuring youngsters can’t buy alcohol in the area, by visiting shops and reminding them of the laws around selling alcohol, and if they bring it with them it will be seized. Our colleagues in British Transport Police will be patrolling the train network to prevent problematic groups getting to Tenby by train.”

Police are also asking parents to be aware of what their children get up to over the weekend and where they might be travelling to.

Following last weekend’s disturbances, plans are now in place – as part of a joint operation between Dyfed-Powys Police, Pembrokeshire Council and British Transport Police – to address and prevent any further similar gatherings in future.
