WREXHAM.......................0 STOCKPORT.....................3

-

ALEX Reid and John Rooney both scored against their former team as promotion-chasing Stockport inflicted another blow to Wrexham’s National League play-off hopes.

Reid, who had a loan spell at Wrexham in 2017, scored two firsthalf goals to put County in control.

Rooney added a second-half penalty after Macauley SouthamHales was brought down by Reece Hall-Johnson.

Stockport are now unbeaten in eight games and are fourth in the table. Wrexham’s third successive loss leaves them in eighth spot, three points off the play-offs.

The sides observed a minute’s silence before kick-off following the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Following two defeats against promotion rivals over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, Wrexham announced three new signings ahead of kick-off.

Forwards Keanu Marsh-Brown, Gold Omotayo and Chris Sang were brought in with Dean Keates’ side having failed to score in the losses to Notts County and Torquay.

Wrexham made most of the running in a positive start with Dior Angus and debutant MarshBrown both trying their luck.

But it was County who took the lead when a long ball forward caught the Dragons defence hesitating and Reid snuck in to score his 13th goal of the season to give County the lead.

County were now looking a threat and a cross from Tom Walker was flicked on by Harry Cardwell for Reid to tap in.

Ex-Newport player MarshBrown made way for another new face, Swiss striker Omotayo, and Wrexham came close when Jamie Reckord’s header from Luke Young’s corner hit the post.

But from a Wrexham corner Southam-Hales made an impressive break, abruptly ending in him being brought down in the area by Hall-Johnson, before Rooney converted the resultant penalty to seal victory.
