Glamorgan left frustrated as it’s a total washout on third day at Old Trafford

-

NO play was possible on the third day of the LV=Insurance County Championship fixture between Lancashire and Glamorgan as heavy rain fell all morning at Emirates Old Trafford.

The umpires abandoned proceedings at lunch with Lancashire unable to resume on their overnight score of 22 without loss in reply to Glamorgan’s first innings total of 344 all out.

Lancashire’s openers Keaton Jennings and Alex Davies will hope to begin again on Sunday morning with the forecast showing signs of improvement in Manchester.

It remains to be seen if England’s record Test wicket taker, James Anderson will get another chance to bowl with a rain-affected draw the most likely result.

“The forecast was that bad that we all came anticipating what has happened,” said Mark Chilton, Lancashire performance director and assistant coach.

“Points are the primary aim with the draw the probable result and with no chance of us winning the game. For us it is about getting as many points as we can and the forecast looks a bit better tomorrow so we’re hopeful of a full day’s play.

“It will be about laying a strong foundation in that first hour and then looking to maximise our batting points from the rest of the game.

“Tomorrow is still a very important day - a point in April and May is just as significant as it is in the back end of the season.

“We went into this season knowing we had this first block of five fixtures but you don’t know what the weather is going to do so we don’t tend to set too many targets about what we want to do because there are so many variables that come into it.

“But obviously you want to start strongly and we knew the importance of this first spell and it was important for us to be playing some good, strong cricket right from ball one which I think we’ve done.

“It always great to have Jimmy (Anderson) here.

“He has been around a fair bit training with us and he prides himself in playing for us.

“You only have to watch what he has produced in this game after a period of rest.

“His quality is so high now that he is able to slip back into some fabulous bowling and he has been brilliant to watch, It’s a shame he’s not been able to maximise it in this game but hopefully he will have his day for us in the next one.”
