TV FILMS of the week
1 SPECTRE Tonight, ITV, 8pm
The last theatrically released Bond adventure to date sees the newly appointed M (Ralph Fiennes) battling political forces, including Max Denbigh (Andrew Scott), to protect the integrity of MI6 following a merger with MI5. A cryptic message reveals ghosts from Bond’s past and 007 (Daniel Craig, pictured) follows a chain of evidence that leads to Dr Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux), daughter of fugitive Mr White (Jesper Christensen). Aided by technical wizard Q (Ben Whishaw) and plucky agent Eve Moneypenny (Naomie Harris), Bond criss-crosses the globe and infiltrates a menacing organisation named SPECTRE, fronted by the enigmatic Franz Oberhauser (Christoph Waltz). It’s a robust tale of espionage and dark family secrets.
2 CAPERNAUM Tomorrow, Film 4, 11.40pm
A 12-year-old boy survives by his wits in Lebanon in director Nadine Labaki’s drama, which was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Oscar. The family of Zain (Zain Al Rafeea, left) survives by smuggling drugs into prison. When the operation hits a snag, Zain’s parents decide to sell his younger sister as a child bride.
3 DESTRY RIDES AGAIN Tuesday, Film 4, 11am
The all-American James Stewart and the sultry Marlene Dietrich, pictured, may not have seemed like an obvious pairing, but their chemistry sizzles in this comedy Western. A principled lawman arrives in the town of Bottleneck, determined to end corruption. However, he doesn’t realise he’ll also have to take on a seductive saloon singer.
4 WHITE HOUSE DOWN Wednesday, channel, time
Channing Tatum, pictured, is a security guard who just happens to be touring the White House with his daughter when a group of terrorists seize control and attempt to kill the president (Jamie Foxx). This action thriller was rather overshadowed by the similar Olympus Has Fallen, but it’s a lot more fun.
5 A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS Thursday, Sony Movies Classic, 4.30pm
This Oscar-winning historical drama stars Robert Shaw, left, as Henry VIII who wishes to divorce so he can marry Anne Boleyn (Vanessa Redgrave). This leads to a clash with his chancellor, Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield), who refuses to support the annulment – or Henry’s plan to make himself head of the Church of England.
6 LONG SHOT Friday, BBC1, 10.45pm
Starring Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron, pictured, it’s the story of a loose-cannon liberal journalist who hooks up again with the woman who was once his first crush, and who now just happens to be the US Secretary of State. A charming rom-com spoilt by one particular gross-out moment near the end.
7 THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US Saturday, Channel 4, 9pm
Brrr! You can almost feel the cold as London neuro-surgeon Idris Elba and American brideto-be Kate Winslet, pictured, get stranded at the top of a snowy peak in Utah after a plane crash. They face seemingly hopeless odds as they try to get out of the wilderness alive, while fighting their growing attraction to each other.
