Dog lucky to survive 30ft waterfall plunge

-

A DOG has survived a 30ft fall down the popular Sgwd y Pannwr waterfall in the Brecon Beacons.

Alfie plummeted down the waterfall on Tuesday in front of horrified onlookers, who quickly contacted a mountain rescue team.

The team arrived at the site where, with the help of Alfie’s owners, they helped recover the dog back to the footpath.

Alfie was lifted onto a stretcher and transported to a vet – where it was found that he had fractured his leg in two places.

The Central Brecons MRT wrote on Facebook: “We’re grateful to a large group of passers-by who helped the owners recover Alfie, a German Pointer, to the footpath.

“Sadly, poor Alfie was in too much pain to walk or be carried to the car park, so was treated to a very gentle lift onto one of our stretchers and carefully carried to vehicle transport to a local vets.

“Later in the evening, Alfie’s owners contacted us to say he has fractured his leg in two places and will be operated on but is expected to make a good recovery.”

Alfie’s incident was not the only rescue at the Sgwd y Pannwr waterfall that day, as the Central Brecons MRT were also called to two further incidents at the same site.

On the same waterfall footpath, known for its steep cliff face, a woman had stumbled and suffered a suspected fractured lower leg.

The rescue team helped administer pain relief and carry her on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance, where they were met by two walkers who reported a missing member of their party at the waterfalls.

Rescue team members were deployed along the waterfall trails and dispatched to check all the car parks.

The missing man was located safe and well at Cwm Porth car park, and was reunited with his friends.
