AGOLD phone box is being unveiled in honour of Olympic star Lauren Price in her hometown of Ystrad Mynach. The phone box in honour of the Olympic gold medallist and Wales’ first Olympic boxing champion was funded and organised by the local community council.

Price, 27, won gold in the women’s middleweight final last Sunday in her Olympic debut before returning home to Wales on Tuesday. When she returned home crowds in the street cheered and clapped her.

The phone box in Penallta Road is now set to become a permanent feature, with the council planning to display photos of Price inside alongside work from local artists.

A Facebook post from Gelligaer Community Council said: “Our phone box, or should I now say Lauren’s phone box, in Ystrad Mynach is looking amazing! Gelligaer Community Council have received so many lovely and positive comments for pulling this off. It’s an absolute pleasure to honour Lauren this way.

“It’s still a work in progress with glazing, lighting and more to be done inside, but you won’t be disappointed. It’ll look stunning by the time we’ve finished with it! Thanks everyone for your support.”

Price was raised in Ystrad Mynach by her grandparents Linda and Derek after her parents gave her up.

As she grew up, it became clear she was a talented athlete going on to play football for Wales 52 times and also representing her country in netball and taekwondo.

Price has also won world, European and British honours in kickboxing.
