Man dies after fall from M4 bridge

A MAN has died after falling from the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge. Emergency services were called to the scene on Friday morning, following a report that a person had fallen from the bridge.

Gwent Police and crews from the Coastguard and the Severn Area Rescue Associatio­n (Sara) attended. The man was taken by ambulance to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, where he died.

The man’s next of kin have been informed and his death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokespers­on for Gwent Police said: “We received a report that a man had fallen from the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge at around 5.45am on Friday, March 25.

“Our officers attended and a man was removed from the water, following a search of the area by the Coastguard Rescue Service and Severn Area Rescue Associatio­n.”

The statement continued: “A 32-year-old man was taken by ambulance to Southmead Hospital in Bristol where it was later confirmed that he had died; his next of kin have been informed.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report has been submitted to the coroner in relation to the death.”

A coastguard spokespers­on said: “HM Coastguard received a request for assistance from the police at an incident near the Prince of Wales Bridge, just before 6.15am this morning. A coastguard helicopter, Sara lifeboat and Chepstow Coastguard Rescue Team and the police were sent.”

A spokespers­on for Sara added: “We launched Sara Lifeboat 3, which is our D-Class inshore lifeboat from Sara Beachley, to an incident not long after 6am this morning.

“The coastguard helicopter also attended.

“The thoughts of the Sara crew are with the family and friends of the man concerned.”
