Met’s four minutes of joy enough to keep on top

- WELSH PREMIER

TWO goals in a killer four-minute spell at the end of the first half ensured Cardiff Met won 2-1 at Haverfordwest County and hung on to the top spot in the JD Cymru Premier Play-Off Conference.

Having fallen behind to a Ben Fawcett goal on the half-hour mark, the students were forced to hit back to stay in the hunt for the top spot.

Their response was almost immediate as first Joe Evans and then Kyle McCartney hit the target.

They hung on to their advantage until the death and with Connah’s Quay Nomads being held to a draw at Aberystwyth Town, it meant the students were able to reach the end of season play-offs as the leading side.

A 76th minute equaliser from Cameron Allen spoiled the Nomads date at the seaside in west Wales as he rubbed out Craig Curran’s 39th minute effort for the visitors. The game ended in a 1-1 draw and Craig Harrison’s side, Premier champions last season, finished third.

In the battle between the two relegated teams, it finished 1-0 to Cefn Druids against Barry Town United to give them only their second win of the campaign. The winning goal was an own goal from Rhys Abbruzzese.

In the Championship Conference, Bala Town enjoyed an end of season romp at Maes Tegid as they beat Penybont 11-0. No fewer than four players scored twice – Lassan Mendez, Johnny Spittle, Paul Rutherford and Bradley Davies – as next week’s Welsh Cup finalists rested the bulk of their squad.

Champions The New Saints picked up their trophy after a 3-1 home win over Caernarfon Town. Declan McManus added two more goals to his season’s tally to end the league season with 24, while Ryan Brobbel got the other.

Newton went to Flint Town United and ended up with a 1-1 draw.
