GIRL INSPIRED TO BECOME A CELTIC QUEEN

ASEVEN-YEAR-OLD girl from Wrexham has become an internet sensation – after showcasing her unique costume for school. Florence “Florrie’ Roberts decided to go to school in a Welsh Celtic costume after the school had asked pupils to dress as members of the Royal Family ahead of the Jubilee celebration.

But for Florence, and with the aid of her mum, Charlotte Roberts, this was an opportunity to go further into the past and dress up as none other than Boudica, also known as Buddug in Welsh. Boudica was a Celtic queen who led a revolt against Roman rule in ancient Britain in AD60 or 61.

Charlotte decided to share a photograph of her daughter dressed in her costume on Twitter, with the caption “when your daughter’s school is making them dress as royalty”. By yesterday lunchtime it had garnered more than 72,000 likes and reached more than three million users on the social media platform.

According to Charlotte, Florrie was “so happy” to go to school to show off her costume.

“I’ve been teaching her some history about the Celts and the Romans recently after she found some of my old Celtic bracelets and brooches from my school trips as a child,” Charlotte explained.

“The school requested that children went in as kings or queens, princes and princesses on Thursday. Me and Florrie discussed who she could go as.

“She agreed on Boudica because she was brave and we looked through Google for some ideas and she picked out some ideas from there.

“The costume compiled of a dress with some tartan fabric and a rope belt, a Celtic brooch and bracelet from my school trip, and a cardboard shield that we spray-painted gold and then painted the triskelion pattern onto it with blue paint. She picked the symbol from some Celtic symbols on Google.

“She was so happy going to school and she showed her costume off to everybody.

“She’d been telling people for days who she was going as.

“A little boy on the yard took her over to show his mum. Florrie said everyone thought her costume was cool.”

Many have praised the youngster for her costume choice, with others showing what their children dressed up as for similar themes across the UK.

“I’m shocked at the response!” Charlotte added. “Seeing the comments made me feel so proud as a parent.

“When Florrie finished school last night I told her that her picture had been liked by about 6,000 people and her jaw dropped.”

She added: “I think it’s great that it has reached over three million people. Now there are millions of people talking about history that happened about 2,000 years ago.”
