Stay and play

After nearly four years of construction, Beijing hospitality group Chao has unveiled its newest project, an ambitious hotel, co-working hub, events centre and living space in the hip neighbourhood of Sanlitun. Germany’s GMP Architekten has given a minimalist new face to an existing 28-storey building using glass and concrete, with statement features like a ten metre-high outer colonnade leading towards the main entrance. Local design firm Citidec took advantage of the building’s triangular footprint to create open-plan yet homely spaces, including a library, a gym, a chapel and restaurants. The 180 airy, studio-style guest rooms and 40 apartments are furnished with bespoke walnut and leather furniture in a muted colour palette, designed and produced with Shanghaibased Stellar Works. Exhibition and cultural spaces, an amphitheatre and a cinema are housed in the basement. A year-round programme of events makes Chao a destination in itself.
