Neu­tral-den­sity fil­ters are dark fil­ters that re­duce the amount of light com­ing through the lens and there­fore al­low you to ar­ti­fi­cially ex­tend shut­ter speeds for cre­ative ef­fect – any­thing mov­ing in the scene dur­ing the ex­po­sure will blur. This is a use­ful tech­nique when shoot­ing near water, which can be recorded as an ethe­real mist, adding at­mos­phere to the shot.
