Neutral-density filters are dark filters that reduce the amount of light coming through the lens and therefore allow you to artificially extend shutter speeds for creative effect – anything moving in the scene during the exposure will blur. This is a useful technique when shooting near water, which can be recorded as an ethereal mist, adding atmosphere to the shot.
