A top shot of Northumberland’s beach-side Bamburgh Castle

A form of Bamburgh Castle has looked out across the Ross Back Sands and North Sea for around 1,500 years, with its latest incarnation standing here since the 11th Century. As we consider our first summer adventures after lockdown, destinations like the wild, historic Northumberland coastline are very much at the forefront of our thoughts (see Secret Britain, p54) – although of course we’ll have to take local sensitivities to travel into account first. But we’ll happily be patient for Bamburgh, which is hoping to reopen in July. Time is very much on its side, after all.
