20 Clare, Suffolk

-

A fine medieval wool town in the Stour Valley, Clare is often overlooked. Daniel Defoe, writing in the early 18th century, described it as ‘a poor town and dirty’ – these days it is anything but. Particularly striking is the 15th-century Ancient House, which has luxuriant white pargeting (decorative plastering) like the sugar icing on a fancy cake. Directly opposite is St Peter and St Paul’s Church, a handsome perpendicular building in which Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon have bespoke pews with their crests. The sundial outside, inscribed ‘Go about your business’, seems to tell the time with uncanny accuracy. LM www.visit-clare.co.uk
