Wanted: The best young sports stars
»»DO you have a son, daughter, brother or sister, neice or nephew, student or outstanding performer at your sports club that you want to tell us about?
The West Briton, Cornishman and Cornish Guardian newspapers are getting together to look for the best young sports people in the Duchy under the age of 18 for a forthcoming feature called ‘Reach for the Stars’.
We are looking for young athletes, footballers, rugby players, tennis players – anyone who is reaching for the top of their chosen sport; the best young sports people in the South West, from any sport, however popular or obscure.
All you need to do – if you are not the parent – is ask a parent’s permission, and of course the young person in question, and then send their contact details in an email, along with a short explanation of who the sports star is, what they do, what they have achieved – and why they are ‘reaching for the stars’.
Editor of the Cornishman, Scott Harrison, said: “Cornwall is full of young talented sportspeople and it will be great to tell their stories of achievement.
“Generations of sports stars have begun their sporting lives in the county and we want to find out about the next generation of Cornish starts right now.”
Mr Harrison added: “Sport is not cheap, equipment needs updating, clothes and travel are not always easily funded – and we hope that by highlighting young talented sports people in the region we can generate interest and perhaps find them sponsors.
“This is also an opportunity for businesses to find someone to support.”
The feature is launching this Christmas and will run throughout 2024.
