Success in the bag for slimmers

Help for Cancer Research

- Debbie Hall

We s t Lothian slimmers have been losing pounds from their figures while raising pounds for charity.

Members of a number of Slimming World groups in West Lothian have collected bags of clothes they’ve successfully slimmed out of to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Consultants in Armadale, Whitburn, Bathgate, Har t h i l l , Fauldhouse, Shotts and Winchburgh Slimming World groups, encouraged members, their friends and families to springclean their wardrobes and collect the clothes, shoes and accessories they’ve successfully slimmed out of to generate valuable stock for Cancer Research UK shop.

Together the groups, who have lost a stunning 2442 stones since January this year, were taking part in the organisation’s national fundraising campaign, the Big Slimming World Clothes Throw.

And last year Slimming World’s Big Clothes Throw raised £ 1.7m for Cancer Research UK, and this year the organisation aims to raise £2m for the charity.

With each bag worth up to £25, consultant Moira Rennie said she hopes her slimmers’ contribution will help with that total.

She said: “The incredible members have amazed me with their enthusiasm, dedication and commitment once again. This year’s Big Clothes Throw has been a fantastic success, and I can’t believe just how many bags my members, their friends and families have managed to collect for Cancer Research UK. It’s been so rewarding and I’m so proud to help pull together such a phenomenal amount of stock for such a worthwhile cause.”

Elizabeth Hicks, a member who has lost 3st 5lbs and dropped from a dress size 20 to 16, said: “It felt really liberating to donate all my old clothes. I actually enjoyed bagging them up and saying goodbye – it felt like I was saying bye to the old me.”

Yvonne Stevenson, deputy manager of the Cancer Research UK shop in Linlithgow, thanked the slimmers for their donations.

She added: “We’re really grateful to all the West Lothian Slimming World members who cleared out their cupboards and generously donated their unwanted items to Cancer Research UK shops. All funds raised will go towards the charity’s research to beat over 200 types of cancer, helping to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.”
