ACTION PACKED

Hectic schedule of five races in nine days

- Callum Carson

The Edinburgh Border Roofing Monarchs are back in league action tomorrow (Friday) as they are set to enter a spell that sees them races five times in nine days.

They welcome the Ipswich Witches to the Armadale Stadium on Friday night which kicks off three matches in three days with trips to Berwick and Scunthorpe scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

And they barely have time to rest before home and away clashes with the Plymouth Devils the following Friday and Saturday as the Premier League action really begins to kick in to gear.

The Armadale-based side will be hoping to go one better against the Witches, having fallen to a narrow defeat in East Anglia earlier in the season.

However, they can be confident in the fact that the 48-45 loss came without the ever-improving Erik Riss in their line-up.

The Monarchs this week added Erik’s older brother, Mark, to their roster at the expense of Jye Etheridge, who has struggled mightily to make an impact in his first season racing in Britain. The elder Riss brother is in line for his Edinburgh debut on Friday.

And it certainly won’t be an easy introduction into British speedway for the 21-year-old as Ipswich can boast an impressive team that includes Danny King, Nico Covatti and Ben Barker.

Edinburgh are searching for their third straight Premier League title but currently languish in 10th place and need to ensure they pick up the points this week if they are to put themselves back in the play-off picture.

Meanwhile, former Monarchs fan favourite and captain Craig Cook will be hoping to go one better than last year when he takes part in the British Final on Monday in Manchester.
