Amputee Becca hits new heights for two charities

- Eddie Harbinson

A Livingston woman who had her leg amputated as a baby has abseiled down an 80ft building for two charities.

Becca Newman, 24, was one of just eight amputees who scaled the Atlantic Quay building in Glasgow on June 10 in aid of Finding Your Feet and Cash for Kids.

She was joined by members of her family and 60 charity workers who also took the plunge to support adult and child amputees.

And Becca managed to raise hundreds of pounds for both charities alongside Finding Your Feet founder and fellow amputee Corinne Hutton.

Speaking to the Courier this week, Becca said: “There was a couple of adults doing it and there was a lot of kids there as well. My family also took part because I was on at them about it.

“We managed to raise £400 and it felt great because I hadn’t done anything like that for many years.”

Becca has always lived an active life but in the last few years she began suffering problems with her knee.

She continued: “I had my leg amputated when I was one but in the last four years I’ve had a range of problems as my condition caught up with me.

“I was on various bouts of medication and gave up a lot of my hobbies. I became isolated because there’s not many my age who are in a similar situation.

“I found Finding Your Feet and they helped me meet other people who are going through the same thing as me.”

She added: “You don’t realise that having friends behind you is so much of a help.

“Initially, when I approached Finding Your Feet, I didn’t think they’d be able to help me but I wanted to help others.

“I speak to children who are in the same situation as me and give advice. My boyfriend Phil is a climbing instructor and you see that these kids have no fear and have so much persistence.

“I’m glad I have been able to contribute to the charity.”

Finding Your Feet founder Corinne Hutton said: “The abseil marks our first charity event at Atlantic Quay.

“Our teams took the plunge for two brilliant charities Cash for Kids that does so much for vulnerable children and Finding Your Feet that helps people who have experienced life changing trauma.

“Every penny raised will be split between the two charities.”
