Burgh Halls to host Matisse exhibition

Coup for gallery

- Marjorie Kerr

A West Lothian gallery is set to welcome a free exhibition by one of the 20th century’s most influential artists.

The Gallery at Linlithgow Burgh Halls will host the Matisse: Drawing with Scissors - Late Works 1950-1954 exhibition from July 22 to October 9.

The French painter, sculptor and designer, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) is celebrated for his vibrant works. The Hayward Touring exhibition from Southbank Centre, London, features 35 posthumous prints of the famous cut- outs that he produced in the last four years of his life, including many of his iconic images such as The Snail and the Blue Nudes.

West Lothian’s executive councillor for culture and leisure Dave King said: “We are delighted to welcome the Matisse exhibition to the Gallery at Linlithgow Burgh Halls. It’s a real coup for West Lothian to host the Hayward Touring exhibition by one of the 20th century’s most influential artists.”

The lithographic reproductions in this exhibition are taken from a special double issue of ‘ Verve’, a review of art and literature, published by Matisse’s friend, the critic and fine art publisher Tériade, in 1958, four years after Matisse’s death.

The publication was planned during Matisse’s lifetime and the first lithographic plates were prepared under his direction a few days before he died.

The gallery is also hosting three special events to coincide with the exhibition.

Kerry Watson from the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art will provide a glimpse into the world of Matisse in a free tour on September 8, from 7pm. A Creative Paper Cutting Workshop with Alice Spicer also takes place on August 14,from 11am to 5pm, followed by a Matisse and the Alhambra: Drawing Arabesques workshop with tutor Camille Archer on September 25, from 10am to 4pm.
