West Lothian Council’s Executive agreed to develop a long-term solution to pedestrian safety on Cappers Bridge, which will be included in the council’s 2017/18 Capital Programme.

Concern has been raised regarding pedestrians crossing the bridge, as it does not have a footpath.

The views of Armadale Community Council, Southdale Primary Parent Council and the wider school community, and residents will now be sought on the issue, with a further report back to Council Executive in October to agree the best way forward.

Council leader John McGinty said: “It’s important we find a long-term solution for Cappers Bridge that suits the needs of the Armadale community. The opening of the new Southdale Primary School in August will lead to more travel in this area, and it’s important we ensure the views of the new school community are taken into account.”

Cappers Bridge is owned by Network Rail and carries the B8084 road over the Edinburgh to Glasgow via Bathgate railway line. Network Rail originally planned to upgrade the bridge to include a footpath as part of the Airdrie to Bathgate works, but decided not to undertake the works.

A new pedestrian footbridge at this location is estimated to cost over £1 million, and an alternative pedestrian route is available nearby from Armadale Station to Southdale Way.
