Findlay is keen to build on pal’s work

New Fauldhouse boss named

New Fauldhouse United manager Ste p h e n Findlay has paid tribute to his predecessor and admits it will be tough to emulate Davy Cowan’s achievements at the club.

Cowan left the Superleague side two weeks ago after a five-year spell at the helm that included two promotions and two seasons of top-flight football.

But former Airdrieonians youth coach Findlay is delighted at being handed the reins at a club he once played for.

He said: “I spent a couple of seasons with Fauldhouse as a player, although truth be told I didn’t really do that much playing.

“They’re a club I’ve always had a soft spot for and always look out for their results, so to be given the chance to manage the club is something I’m really bowled over by.

“Davy and his team did an absolutely incredible job for Fauldhouse and he deserves a tremendous amount of praise.

“I know Davy well and I actually spoke to him when I was thinking about applying for the job just to get his thoughts and he told me that I’d be the kind of guy the committee would be looking for.

“When I was given the chance to speak to the committee they really impressed me and I knew straight away it’s a job I wanted, so I’m delighted that they felt I was the best man for the job.”

He added: “I’m not here to rip things up and start again. Davy has laid the foundations with all his hard work and has the club in a very good position.

“It would be daft to come in and start from scratch. We’re here to build on what’s already in place.”

Findlay will be assisted by James Grant, while former Airdrie striker John Boyle joins the team as a player-coach.

And the new boss was delighted that the 29- year- old agreed to come on board at United.

He said: “John has turned down opportunities at senior level to join Fauldhouse and he’s a tremendous signing.

“To have him on the coaching staff is also a great bonus. He’ll certainly help me out and hopefully he gains valuable experience as a coach as well.”

As for his footballing philosophy, Findlay says he’s keen to attract players who will give their all, saying: “When I was with the Airdrie Under-20 side that won the league, there was an unbelievable team spirit and a determination to work hard for each other and give everything in every game. That’s what I want at Fauldhouse.

“We’re under no illusions in terms of the task on our hands because Fauldhouse aren’t one of the big teams and don’t have the ability to compete off the field.

“But if you can get the right guys in, guys with the right attitude and guys that work hard, then you can compete on the field and that’s what it’s all about.”

He added: “Plans are under way and I’ll be looking to make signings over the coming days in preparations for the new season. I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
