Over 650 secondary school pupils from across the county took part in the West Lothian Schools’ Track and Field Championships in Grangemouth recently.

The meeting was the final event of a busy West Lothian Secondary School Sports League.

And it was a double celebration for Deans Community High School as they won the Track and Field event as well as being crowned overall champions.

Armadale Academy grabbed the most medals on the day, with 37, but they were pushed into second place in the points tally, with James Young High School finishing third.

Eight West Lothian Schools’ records were broken on the day with Fraser Morris ( Broxburn) and Isla Calvert (Linlithgow) breaking the S1 boys and girls 800m times respectively.

James Young pupils Alix Fairley (S1 girls shot putt) and Hazel Shanley (senior girls 100m) broke West Lothian records as did Broxburn’s Tia Henry (S3 girls high jump), Euan Ballantyne of Armadale (senior boys high jump), Linlithgow’s Katie Taylor (senior girls 800m) and Inveralmond pupil Zoe Yule (senior girls javelin).

The event at the Grangenmouth Stadium was the culmination of another busy year on the sporting front for secondary school students across West Lothian.

Schools have been competing in the West Lothian School Sport Partnership events which have been held between September and June.

And it was a second straight title for Deans CHS as they pipped St Margaret’s Academy to the trophy once again. Linlithgow Academy finished in third place.

Various teams and individuals from all 11 secondary schools have competed in 51 events across 12 different sports over the course of the academic year, with schools picking up points along the way for attendance and performance.

Deans CHS was presented with the overall Secondary School Sports League trophy with students from all competing schools being presented with ‘Honour our Sport’ awards in recognition of both sporting achievement and contribution to school sport.

Councillor David Dodds, Vice Chair of the Education Executive, who was in attendance at the Track and Field championships, said: “It is great to see so many secondary students coming together for the culmination of West Lothian’s school sports calendar.

“I would like to congratulate all of the athletes who have competed during the year for their schools.

“Thanks also go to our PE staff who have gone the extra mile to take their pupils to so many different events. It is also particularly pleasing to see students from across all of our 11 secondary schools being recognised through the ‘Honour our Sport’ awards for all their hard work throughout the year.”
