£50k for club plans

Boost to community wing

- Debbie Hall

Broxburn United Sports Club has scored a £50,000 investment to help develop a new community wing extension at Albyn Park.

The investment comes from Social Investment Scotland’s (SIS) Community Capital Fund, the UK’s first social investment tax relief fund, which raised £400,000 ent i rely from private investors.

The funding will be used by the club to provide extended indoor space for its 32 member clubs, which include soccer school, youth teams, junior team, boxing club and over 50s community activities.

The money will also go towards establishing a hub within the community space for members of the local community to access a wide range of social, health and well- being related programmes and activities.

Alan Cunningham, secretary of the club’s board, said: “Without the SIS Community Capital investment it would have been impossible for our board to deliver this desperately needed 140m2 of additional community space. The additional room will give our staff the opportunity to expand and extend their range of indoor activities as well as providing a social space for members and visitors to Albyn Park.”

The club is one of seven social enterprises to benefit from SIS’ Community Capital Fund. Alastair Davis, chief executive of Social Investment Scotland, said: “BUSC presented a compelling case, outlining the benefits the community wing would bring to both the member clubs and the wider community. This investment will help them do just that. SIS Community Capital is a great example of how we can use social investment tax relief to open up a new source of capital for social enterprises.”
