Probus Vice President Bob Nowrie welcomed 42 members to this weeks meeting, held as usual in the Hilcroft Hotel. Todays speaker saw the return of Ian Scott this time to present a talk entitled “Drovers of Falkirk” Ians talk was based on the part in history that the Falkirk Tryst played since the 1600s in the practice of driving cattle from the north of Scotland, south for subsequent sale. The men who carried out this task were known as drovers and their journey started in many different parts of the north of Scotland (included the Isles) before travelling on foot all the way to the finishing point in Falkirk. The subsequent sales held each Autumn saw many thousands of cattle (and eventually sheep) being auctioned and some of the money raised was used to help new industries in the area. With photos, route maps and copies of many paintings about drovers, Ian covered this fascinating insight into the life of the drovers which eventually ended around 1900. The vote of thanks was given by John Steel who thanked Ian for another interesting and well presented talk.
