Swans attacked

-

It’s an idyllic setting where nature meets urban surroundings.

But sadly for a flock of swans and cygnets, they were not the only pond life populating the Dedridge pond area at the weekend.

a group of youths are being sought after they attacked the birds - some less than two months old - by throwing stones at them.

police scotland are appealing for information after the incident.

a spokesman said: “our young cygnets and parents were out on the Dedridge pond in Livingston, stretching their wings, only to be targeted by a group of youths who disturbed their peace by throwing stones at them over the weekend.

“We need our community’s help to report or identify the youths involved in this cruel activity.”

Executive councillor for the environment, tom Conn, commented: “It is frankly disgusting to hear that people have been abusing these birds.

“It is extremely disturbing to think that youths would be trying to hurt any animal or bird in this way.

“the swans at Dedridge pond are welcomed by the community and many people have enjoyed watching the cygnets grow over recent weeks.

“this type of antisocial behaviour is mindless and completely unacceptable the people concerned are committing an offence as the swans are a protected species.

“I would encourage anyone who witnesses antisocial behaviour to report the matter to the police by calling 101.

“I would also encourage parents/ carers and wider families to speak to young people about the importance of wildlife in enhancing the quality of the environment.”

We reported last month that the nesting swan on the reed bed adjacent to the pond had laid eight eggs.

at that time the nest was under 24-hour CCtV surveillance courtesy of the Lanthorn Community Complex.

anyone with information on the stone attack is urged to contact police scotland’s non-emergency number 101.
