Winchburgh Bowling Club are celebrating after they won the West Lothian Council trophy.

The team of Jim Nicol, Declan Rennie, Brian Clarkson and Craig Gourlay captured the title at Livingston-based Harrysmuir after finishing top of a table that included Bathgate, Mid Calder and the host club.

Elsewhere on the greens, Glenmavis have three players through to Thursday’s third round of the WLBA Seniors Open.

Jack McLaren, John Armstrong and Rab Waddell will carry the banner for the club when it hosts the final on September 1.

The Bathgate interest is further enhanced by Ritchie Templeton of the neighbouring High Green also making it through to the last16 stage.

Templeton will be bidding to capture the coveted title won on three occasions by his club-mate Dick Saunders.

Tuesday’s second-round play saw McLaren produce a strong performance to beat Ian McGill of East Calder 21-17, while Armstrong advanced at the expense of Whitburn’s John Weir (21-15), with Waddell storming to a 21-6 win over Bill Broadley of Armadale.

Templeton impressed with a 21-12 win over Jim Horsburgh of Watson Memorial but the highlight clash was a dramatic 21-20 thriller at Bankton Mains as Colin Little of Glenmavis edged past Buchan Park’s George Brown.

Defending champion Stuart Smith of Ratho stepped up his bid for back-to- back title glory with a 21-9 win over his club-mate Tom Hill at Harrysmuir while recent WL Masters semi finalist Bob Mackay of Armadale stayed prominent with a 21-13 win over Bill Whalley of Watson Memorial.

There was a major casualty in the shape of Kirkliston star Gordon Logan with the 2014 champion just edged out by Dave McQueen of Bellsburn in a 21-20 nail-biter at Bankton Mains.

West Lothian BA compete in the Inter County Under-25 Calder Cup at Sighthill this Sunday with the club’s banner being carried by Jamie Deegan and Grant Ramsay (Pairs); Rory Walker, Jamie Edwards, and Scott McMaster (Triples) and Nathan McKendrick, Shaun Cairns, Jamie Aitken, and Connor McKendrick (Fours), while Kyle Broadley is the reserve.

Armadale are well placed to finish top of the Bathgate Area Senior Top Ten league table as they enter the 22nd and final round of fixtures with a seven-point lead over Bathgate BC who lie in second place.

The only way they can lose the title is suffering an 8- 0 loss to Stoneyburn with Bathgate winning 8-0 against Springgrove.
