-

a student nurse is undertaking a gruelling marathon to help people suffering with dementia.

Colene Flannigan and her partner Dan sutherland are running the Loch ness marathon this month to raise money for Maple Villa dementia unit for men in Livingston.

Colene said she had been inspired to help after meeting some truly special patients while working at the unit.

she said:“I started my mental health nursing journey last year and never could I have imagined how it would change me as a person and affect me in the way it has.

“I am extremely privileged to have had a placement at Maple Villa and experience first hand the excellent care the gentlemen receive every day.

“the time and patience the staff give to the gentlemen on a daily basis is the most heartwarming thing I have ever seen.

“Each and every man is cared for with the dignity and respect they so much deserve and I really saw a different side to nursing in my time on placement.

“Maple Villa is a very busy ward but the atmosphere there is very happy.

“so me and Dan are going to run the Loch ness marathon to raise as much funds for the ward and the Maple Villa family as we can. a donation of whatever you can afford would be so greatly appreciated.”

Maple Villa, situated in Craigshill Care Facility, was specifically built as a specialist dementia unit catering for patients with particularly challenging aspects of the condition.

a dedicated activities nurse supports Maple Villa, whose staff believe patient activity is an essential part of the service.

they provide group activities, entertainment and a‘time out’area in a purpose-built activities section.
