Houses flattened at Deans South
Bulldozers clear the way for new homes
Demolition work at the Deans South estate in Livingston has been completed on 16 blocks.
Site clearance of the blocks is now complete and preparation is underway for the new build council housing construction programme, due to begin on site later this year.
A total of 117 new homes are currently planned for Deans South and a masterplan is also being commissioned to assess how the site can be developed further, with consultations set for later this year.
West Lothian Council is currently building 1000 new council homes for rent across all nine council ward areas.
The council say the project will also deliver community benefits for local businesses, who will work on the construction of the new homes. A number of apprentices will also be employed on the sites.
A total of 10 properties on the Deans South estate remain in private ownership with the redevelopment planned next to these properties. All council tenants who lived on the estate were re-housed several years ago.
George Paul, Executive councillor for services for the community, said: “I’m delighted to see the regeneration of the Deans South estate take another major step forward.
“Massive progress has been made to redevelop the estate in recent years, and demolishing the vacant properties is a significant milestone in bringing the whole estate back to life.
“There are currently over 9000 applicants on the waiting list for a council home in West Lothian, and these new houses are part of the 1,000 affordable homes we are building across West Lothian to help meet this demand.
“The new council homes for rent will help build a brand new community for Deans South going forward.”
